1999-10-17

Hey All,

Currently, I'm a couple miles south of Chrisman, IL, camped under a bridge. When I was looking for a place to stop, this looked to be the only accesable place that wasn't being bombarded by the wind. Since then the wind has stopped.

My map says Chicago is 140 miles to Danville. I'm about 20 miles south of there. That's 160 miles in two days.

Of course I had a killer tail wind today. I didn't like to stop because then the wind would hit me all the harder and I'd get cold. I heard on the radio that the temperatures are supposed to get very cold over the next two days. I just hope that means the wind will continue out of the north, pushing me south toward warmer climate that much faster.

My legs sure were tired by the end of today. Actually, they were tired before the end. I'm definitely not at peak performance yet.

The only thing I saw of real noteworthy value today was a cow leg off to the side of the road. No idea why it was there.

Highway 1 is about 50% recently repaved, and much of the rest of it is in great shape, so rolling was easy.

My chains and gears must have gotten real dirty, because they were making a ton of noise. So I pulled my bike into a car wash and sprayed them off real good. They sounded great after that.

Well, unfortunately, I don't have that much more to write.

P.S. Next morning. I've been told that coyotes howl when they've completed a kill. If that's the case, then there was a heap of killing going on last night by several different packs. I also had two animals fighting nearby my tent. I guess they eventually worked things out. But the biggest hindrance to my sleep has been the cold. I'm thinking I should have left a couple weeks earlier. If somebody could check the weather channel and get back to me with the lows for between here and Atlanta for the next week, that would be great. I might need to upgrade my sleeping bag. But this tent sure does make a difference.
