1999-11-06 Everything here is really big or really small. I talked to a guy at the border today who said he knew where to find oak trees with a 3 yard diameter trunk and a 70 yard diameter spread of the branches. The bugs are big. All the deer I've seen so far a fairly small.I crossed the border this morning and the town of Quincy greeted me with the steepest hill I'd seen in a day or so. I thought Florida was supposed to be flat? And who would name a town Quincy? That sounds like some kind of dog name. I stopped to do some laundry there. The bathroom in the laundromat was horid, even by my standards. I've heard of missing, but the way in which the last occupant missed must have taken some skill. I headed east from Quincy on highway 12. Though it had its share of hills, it was as long and straight as you could believe. And the soil: what soil? It was all sand. I'm suprised anything grows, but grow it does. I stopped off at a church to use its water spicket to take a road shower. I saw this spider. It was black with brown markings on its back and it was a little larger than a penny. But seemingly without web or trap, it had caught a grasshopper at least twice its size. That's impressive. Because he was in my way, I grabbed the grasshopper and moved him someplace else. The spider never let go. I'm now eating lunch in Bristol. What kind of a name is Bristol, anyway? It just sounds goofy. Maybe the name is from South America. I've been taking my time today. My body is always whining about something. Now it's my ankles. For whatever reason they are really sore. So, are there any hurricanes moving my way? |
