1999-10-19 As I drove to find a campsite tonight, I said to myself, now be careful, most of the people around here could handle a rifle by the time they were four. Sound like I'm stereotyping? Maybe, but you didn't see Hatfield. I believe that it is the first of many hick towns that I'll be biking through. My bike is called a Trek Multitrack. It's basically a hybrid between your standard road bike and your standard mountain bike. I have front suspension and seat post suspension, and I used it all today. Route 66 coming out of Evansville left about two inches of space to the right of the white line. Most roads have about two to three feet. I spent a lot of time hitting the gravel as trucks passed. That could have caused problems for your standard touring bike. Okay, Evansville didn't end up being as much of a hole as I first thought, although its roads could use much more work. I was sitting under a tree in Evansville. Some kids just stopped by to see what I was "playing." Tim and Zack are their names. I showed them my PocketMail. Tim used it to send an email to his step-brother in North Carolina. They thought it was cool. Zack has his own laptop. Kids these days! Now they're looking for water moccasins (a kind of poisonous water snake). Pray for Tim. He's living with his grandma because his mom in North Carolina is having a tough time keeping up with the bills and got in a big fight with his step-father. Sounds like a snow ball situation. I'm wore out. I think I'm close to the point where pain turns to ache. I was tempted to get a hotel tonight and rest up good and proper, and do my laundry, and de-smell myself. My face is burned up so I look like an apple. My muscles need to "regenerate" as the borg call it. But here I am camping out again. The radio said it was supposed to get down to thirty degrees tonight. Hopefully I'm getting used to it, because I haven't found any place to upgrade my sleeping bag. I think I will stay here tomarrow until the dew dries (if the sun is out) because everything I have is damp. |
