Little ants. Big Earth.

1999-10-18

It occurs to me that I never explained the subject of my last email, "Right on the fold." It simply means that I had made it to the half-way point on my Illinois state map, at least if you determine it by where the map is folded.

Now, as I sit beside the highway watching semi after semi after semi roll by, I notice these tiny little ants. For them to hike a yard is like me biking a mile. Of course me biking a mile is like a car driving seven. To continue with that, a car driving seven miles is like an airplane flying between two close cities. And with all that, these ants will probably never travel more than a couple of yards from their nest in their entire lifetime.

I almost began to keep a tally of dead raccoons versus dead opussom along side the road, but decided against it on the grounds of that would be too morbid and probably too much work. But they have to be just about even, far outnumbering deer and squirrel. Anyway, enough of that.

I've finally crossed out of the Illinois flatlands into land with many more hills. I figure these are just training hills to prepare me for Kentucky and Tennessee.

I'm not too sure, but I think I am just south od Gordon, IL, still on Highway 1. The towns here are small and few and far between, just the way I like them.

I might actually make if out of Illinois before dark, but it's hard to say.

I should be able to send this email off when I get doen to Lawrenceville.
