1999-11-16

Knowing I was to hit Houston today, I prepared my self for a bump-and-jump, run-and-dodge, white-knuckles kind of day. It turns out that that wasn't at all necessary.

Biking through Houston was almost pleasant. The roads are wide, and for the most part I rode through very light traffic. Just about all the interstates and other major roads I had to ride on had utility roads (or feeders) flanking them. Those had very light traffic as well. In fact the only difficult part about today was getting over bridges.

Actually, it's been over a week since I've seen a real hill. But I've gone over a few bridges that would put the hills in Kentucky to shame.

My route today was a winding one. I began just east of Monroe City. I followed 65 west until I hit Anahuac, where I ate some breakfast. I went north up 562? to interstate 10. This was necessary to get over the water. Interstate 10 took me to Cove were I followed 565 down to 146 to Baytown to 225 to Pasadena. Eventually I had to take city roads. Here are some of them in pretty much the correct order: Lawndale, Telephone (really), Leeland, Main (south), 610 (east), Almeda (north), Holly Hall. I am now at 2111 Holly Hall.

There wasn't much for scenery today unless you happen to get a big thrill out of oil refineries. I don't.

I'll have to figure out how long I'll be here in Houston. I still don't know.
